While in the Caribbean many islands are small enough to see in one day, Mediterranean cities often require more time to explore thoroughly. For more of an "off-the-beaten-track" destination, pop on over to Montenegro. You'll find that this tiny country is actually a can't-miss, even if you do miss it when dreaming up your ideal Mediterranean adventure. Most people opt to visit Kotor, which is home to one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the entire area. Explore the Old City of Montenegro on your Mediterranean vacation trip, where you can see huge forts, ornate churches, and beautiful museums. Hike to the top of the Fortifications of Kotor — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and witness some of the most amazing panoramic views you've ever seen.

Mediterranean cruises are often an idyllic way to experience the marvels of Europe. Think of it as a European sampler; you get a tiny taste of each city before heading to your next destination. After hopping onboard Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas, we share the good, the bad, and the ugly of our Mediterranean Cruise with tons of great information for a first time cruiser. Some churches in Europe will have their own dress codes, as well, so this is important to know for guests planning to visit places like the Sagrada Familia and Sistine Chapel. Generally, major churches in the Mediterranean require arms, shoulders, and legs to be covered.

Most European cruises are at least 7-nights long and include multiple port stops. In fact, Mediterranean sailings usually offer less sea days than a Caribbean cruise, and that means lots more touring time. Downloading a self-guided walking tour to see the city on foot from the cruise terminal is easy. Many tours are available through the ship to see as many sites as possible, but the reality is you will get a taste of each one.

Portions of the balcony are covered, but it puts a damper on your experience, especially when you pay extra for a junior suite. As you know, I wasn’t about to let a little soot keep me from enjoying those gorgeous balcony views, but it is important to note for anyone looking at rooms in the aft portion of the ship. Everyone vacations differently, so a cruise is a great option when traveling with groups. Download the Royal Caribbean app to see the daily activity schedule for the week. Take a stab at the daily trivia, attend an art auction, or try a fitness class. Options are endless, but here are a few things we thought were great activities you want to take advantage of.
MEMORABLE MEDITERRANEAN CRUISES
The Postojna Caves are Europe’s largest caves, offering guests a train ride through the cave system with an hour-long walking tour. Wear long pants and bring a jacket as the caves get cold, regardless of the weather outside. The Port of Koper drops travelers right into the heart of their old town without needing a transfer. The port is 300 meters from the main town square with its cathedral, cafes, restaurants, and tourist attractions. This unique port of call was offered on the 7-night Western Mediterranean Cruise With Royal Caribbean.
Be sure to also keep in mind that only US currency is accepted onboard Royal Caribbean ships. While the ship will offer currency conversions, you will likely get a better rate elsewhere. If your cruise lists a stop in Paris, Rome or Athens, your ship is not actually dropping you off in the city. From magicians to musicals, there is always top-notch entertainment happening in the theater. Don’t miss the Sail Away Party with Balloon Drop to kick start your cruise.
If you don’t want to be covered the entire day, pack a change of clothes in your day bag for after the church visit. While some may feel taking the time to sit down for a long lunch while at port is wasting time, it’s actually one of the best ways to experience a destination’s culture. In addition, it forces you to relax in the middle of the day while at port which can be well appreciated during long, hot summer days.

A Mediterranean cruise is one of Royal Caribbean’s most popular European cruise destinations, with the Western Mediterranean often a starting point for first time cruisers to Europe. While not technically part of the Mediterranean, parts of Spain can be found on the Balearic Sea, which flows right into the Mediterranean. Barcelona is a colorful city worth the visit for its magnificent architectural sights — such as the Sagrada Familia Cathedral, which was designed by Gaudi and is still being constructed today.
When in Greece, you're sure to discover hidden gems of ancient ruins that still stand alongside modern buildings. Discover the best things to do as a local while traveling to Spain for your own Barcelona vacation experience with these helpful ideas & travel tips. Enjoy these Pablo Picasso facts for your vacation travels and save your favorite destinations. Brilliance of the Seas makes it impossible to feel bored during a vacation!
Step back in time when you visit sites like the Acropolis, Pompeii and the ruins of Ephesus with Royal Caribbean. These sites and more dot the landscape of the Mediterranean, acting as a living textbook on ancient times. Here you’ll find lively cultures filled with vibrant people making delicious foods, dancing and relaxing on inviting beaches. Of course, you do not have to book any excursions and can instead figure out activities and transportation on your own. Alternatively, you can find shore excursions with tour operators outside of Royal Caribbean, which may come at a lower cost and offer a wider selection of tours. Some excursions soley offer transportation to and from certain destinations that are far from where cruise ships dock.
The crew members do a fabulous job keeping your stateroom clean and tidy. All room service trays are removed, and they will help you with any requests. I was expecting a Royal Caribbean Cruise to have a top-notch kids club, and the one on Enchantment of the Seas was not that. My six-year-old daughter requested not to attend the kids club because it was boring. Late-night dining is limited to the Park Cafe, which stays open late, offering fresh-baked pizza, sandwiches, and light bites.
Many cruisers visiting Florence plan to visit the Duomo or Statue of David. Those visiting Nice may take a stroll along the waterfront Promenade des Anglais. Likewise, Vatican City and the Colosseum are extremely popular places to visit in Rome. Likewise, if your cruise starts in one city and ends in another, try to plan a few days on land both before and after the cruise. If your cruise departs from Barcelona or Rome, for example, try to arrive there at least 2-3 days before the cruise begins.
You likely won’t have trouble getting by with English in tourist areas and city centers of popular European destinations such as Florence and Marseille. If you’re traveling to the countryside or to lesser visited destinations in the Mediterranean, though, English may be less widely spoken. In fact, part of the fun on a Mediterranean cruise is simply wandering around the destinations you visit.
If there was ever a place that combined culture and romance to perfection, it's seen most with a trip to Italy. Stroll through cobblestone streets in cities like Florence and Rome, or take to the canals in Venice. If you're interested in more of a sunny holiday, the Amalfi Coast provides just that. Here, you can hike Mount Vesuvius or fill your stomach with pizza in Naples.
